Curriculum
Kent Community Nursery School is a play-based program with an emphasis on nature and the social and emotional development of children. The daily schedule includes extended time in free play indoors and outdoors, which allows for child-led learning, exploration, and fine and gross motor development. Opportunities for play are combined with music, art, literature, and science in daily school activities. KCNS children are supported to express feelings and to learn to recognize them in themselves and others.
Daily activities include opportunity for problem-solving experiences that help to formulate language development, emotional literacy, and sensory discrimination. In the curriculum, teachers strive to incorporate the rhythm of the seasons and the interests of enrolled children. For example, when students have shown an interest in dinosaurs, books and songs revolve around this theme. An introduction to reading and mathematics is offered informally through songs and games, which incorporate counting and word or sound recognition skills, thus providing a foundation for later learning. Students complete our program with pre-reading and mathematics skills, a respect for others and themselves, and an eagerness to begin kindergarten. |
